From a geopolitical perspective, the world is divided mainly into:

Eurasia is in turn normally divided into the heartland and the rimland.

  • Rimland is on the coasts of heartland, and includes Europe, the mid-east, Hindoostan, Indochina, and Chyna. Europe is the most important part of the Rimland because it projects power to the mid-east, while the mid-east, Hindoostand, Indochina, and Chyna are all more isolated.
  • Heartland is in the interior and north of Eurasia. It includes russia, mongolia, and central asia. It does not have much, and that is why it's people are always invading the Rimland. This is also why the United states seeks to form friendships mainly with countries in the rimland, letting heartland be it's enemy. For example, America found it necessary to conventionally defeat the nazis because they were conquering the European rimland, while America let communism be in the heartland and sought mainly to contain communism from spreading through rimland.

    • This also goes to show that america is really on the periphery, as is africa, most of the action goes on in eurasia
