The Sino-Soviet Split

In the mid twentieth century, as the Chinese and Russian Communists began to frictionize, President Richard Nixon and hisAdvisor Henry Kissinger made the brilliant choice to seek rapproachment with Communist China, a move which accelerated the collapse of the Soviet Union. China, an east asian country, is part of the geopolitical rimland. China therefore is much more connected with trade routes, thus it's current state of relative wealth compared to russia. China also does not endanger America's vital position in europe, unlike Russia. Thus, by peeling China away from Russia, rather than vice versa, Kissinger made a wise geopolitical move which fractured the USSR
